Israel's military chief of staff has toured the Golan Heights a day after three Syrian tanks entered a demilitarized zone set up in a 1974 disengagement treaty between the sides. Israel complained to U.N. peacekeepers over the incursion. Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz told Israeli soldiers there Sunday to be on high alert, warning that violence from Syria's civil war might reach Israel. Several Syrian shells, apparently misfired, have exploded inside Israel. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. Before that, Syria used the highlands to shell Israeli villages below. Israel annexed the strategic territory in 1981 in a move that is not recognized internationally. The demilitarized zone was created after the 1973 Mideast war, when Syria tried to retake the plateau.

A nascent discussion about gun laws has dominated the nation's agenda during the week following the school shootings in Newtown, Conn. But one dominant voice has been missing from the debate thus far. Since the massacre, the National Rifle Association, which is the largest group representing gun rights, has mostly been silent. That is about to change. The NRA is holding a news conference in Washington on Friday morning. In addition, Wayne LaPierre, the group's CEO, is scheduled to be a guest Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press. The group is not expected to come out in favor of any proposal to restrict gun ownership. "That flies in the face of everything they've done for years," says Scott Melzer, author of Gun Crusaders: The NRA's Culture War.

The attacks deepen fears that militants are seeking to reignite ethnic and sectarian violence in the country, where tensions remain high over areas contested between Iraq's central government and the Kurdish minority. The deadliest of Monday's attacks took place in al-Mouafaqiyah, a village inhabited by families from the Shabak ethnic group. Seven people were killed and 11 were wounded in the bombing, according to police officials. The village lies near the city of Mosul, 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, and is claimed by Arabs, Turkomen and Kurds. The Shabak have their own distinct language and religious beliefs. Elsewhere in the north, two car bombs went off in a majority Turkomen neighborhood in the city of Tuz Khormato, killing five people and wounding 26, said Mohammed al-Asi, a spokesman for Salahuddin provincial council. But as Snyder prepares to sign historic legislation making Michigan the nation's 24th right-to-work state, he'll inevitably be lumped by his detractors with those firebrand Republicans, a distinction that the governor had long sought to avoid.

Fifteen-month-old Prince McLeod Rams died during a three-hour, unsupervised visit with his father, Joaquin S. Rams of Manassas, police said. Manassas Police spokesman Lowell Nevill said that led police to further probe the 2008 suicide of Joaquin Rams' mother and the 2003 shooting death of his ex-girlfriend Shawn K. Mason.

Orphan children play music at an orphanage in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, Dec. 19, 2012. Russia's parliament initially approved a bill banning Americans from adopting Russian orphans on Wednesday in reprisal for a U.S. law punishing alleged Russian human rights violators in a row that has strained bilateral relations. By Jim Heintz, The Associated PressRussia's parliament on Wednesday gave overwhelming preliminary approval to a measure banning Americans from adopting Russian children, a harsh retaliatory move against U.S. human rights legislation. Follow @NBCNewsWorld But the proposal appears to be too extreme for some senior Russian officials. The foreign minister and the education minister spoke out flatly against an adoption ban, and the speaker of the upper house of parliament, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, suggested the lower house members were letting emotions overtake rationality.
